Ursuline and St. Joe's Come Out on Top in 2008 Tiger Tournament
January 26, 2008 by Jim Charles & Tom Dunn 'Y' Title Game St. Joe's 34, ICS 31
The mid-winter tradition held at Fournier Hall known as the Tiger Tournament attracts a number of good CYM (7th/8th grade) teams from the area. It is divided into two brackets - a 'C' and a 'Y'. While both divisions feature competitive teams, it is the C Bracket that gets the top billing.
The Championship Game of the Y Bracket pitted St. Joe's on the Brandywine against Immaculate Conception from Elkton. This was an interesting matchup as it featured the height of ICS versus the athleticism and agility of St. Joe's. The game did not disappoint. Things were locked up at 7 all after the first quarter. Going into halftime, St. Joe's held onto a razor thin 1-point lead. The "Tall vs. Quick" battle was, to this point, an even one.
Things began to change in third. St. Joe's clamped down on defense - allowing just 4 points in 7 minutes while they managed to collect 10 of their own. This quarter would prove to be the difference.
In the fourth, ICS made adjustments. The greatest - and most controversial - of these was to position a guard at halfcourt when St. Joe's had the ball. The general idea being that if ICS got a defensive board, they would fire the ball out to mid-court guard for an easy fastbreak layup. While this particular setup failed to yield much in the way of points, ICS was able to best St. Joe's in the final period 9 - 5, but this added up to 3 points shy of a victory. St. Joe's took the Y Division Tournament Title, 34 - 31.
Pointguard, Jenna Chodos, was the offensive focal point for St. Joe's delivering 12 points for the green and white. Right behind her were teammates Emily Horwitz with 9 points, Annie McDonough with 7 and Sophie Duphily with 5. A nice, balanced attack giving St. Joe's a lot of options.
For ICS, Marisa Marchegiano contributed 10 points, Lindsey White had 8, and Chelsea Richards throwing in 6 for good measure.

St. Joe's Emily Horwitz
Seeing is believing! This is what we mean when we described the game as athleticism vs. height. Here, Emily Horwitz is confronted by a much taller opponent.
ICS's Marisa Marchegiano does a dangerous thing by looking down while dribbling. Jenna Chodos waits for an opening.
Good, tall forwards are hard to come by in CYM. Here's two of that rare breed - Chelsea Richards and Annie McDonough.
One of St. Joe's gifted guards, Sophie Duphily
They may have lost the game, but they kept their spirits up. Here ICS' Peyton Hobson and Marisa Marchegiano give us a 70s flashback with their version of The Bump.
