2007/2008 Season JV Player of the Year Kelly Gimlett - Archmere Academy
March 20, 2008 by Jim Charles & Tom Dunn
We had the privilege and honor of meeting Kelly on a rain-soaked afternoon at Archmere Academy. When we explained to her that, because we decided to name all our year-end award winners at the last minute, no thought had been put into pairing up the various honors with a plaque, trophy, medal, or all-expenses paid trip to the Caribbean. And, in our defense, this is the first year we've even done year-end awards. Well, Kelly, being the good sport and cool kid that she is, said that if we would give her an iPOW shirt, she'd consider us even. Being low on budget as we were, we jumped at her offer!
We first saw Kelly play against Padua and quickly noticed that she was one of the better JVers we had seen up to that time. Later on, during our sojourn to our State Capital to chronicle the Archmere/Dover HS game, Kelly's performance sealed the deal. In the stands, we talked about how clearly ready-for-varsity she was and wondered aloud why she wasn't there already. And keep in mind that we had seen A LOT of JV players as a consequence of covering all the varsity games that we did this year. There were one or two other girls' names that came up when we discussed this award. While the other girls were very deserving in their own right, we felt, in the end, that Kelly had logged more minutes than our other best candidate and was, over the course of the entire season, a stronger force on her team.
If she keeps up the hard work, stays focused on constantly improving, she cannot fail. Kelly Gimlett will be a name you'll be hearing not only here, but everywhere that covers girls' ball in Delaware.
