Year-End Awards

A year ago, we had a little fun with our First Annual Year-End Awards.  Some of the categories weren't really meant to be taken too seriously, like "Best Blow-up After a Game", but others were meant to be true recognitions, such as our tips of the hat to players and coaches of the year at three different levels:  Varsity, JV, and CYM.  There was nothing too scientific behind how we arrived at each "winner."  It was just our opinions based on what we saw throughout the year.

Well, in my mind anyway, I saw room for improvement heading into 2009.  I thought it would bring more meaning to the awards if we sampled more opinions than just Tom's and my own.  So, I asked a handful of CYM coaches who they thought should be Varsity (7th/8th grade) Player of the Year.  High school JV coaches were likewise sampled for their recommendations for JV POY.  The result of all this is that in some categories, our first instinct choices were "overruled" by the preponderance of outside opinion.  And this is all for the better.  While our system is not perfect by any means, it is a whole lot better than it was in 2008.  Better winners will be the result, and in time, these awards might actually be looked upon by the local hoops community as a real "feather in the cap" for aspiring student-athletes.

But enough yappin'!  Let's fork over the awards!
