Telisha Turner with Just Ten Games to Go

In a story posted here on December 8th, 2006, I wrote, "Where did they find Telisha Turner? Although only accounting for 4 points, she nevertheless was the catalyst for the Lady Dragon offense. Her dribbling ability – she juked many a Caravelian out of her shoes – and her skill at advancing the ball have me believing that she is the best one-guard Glasgow has had since Lindsey Dyal, even if she may not score as much." Well, maybe she didn't hit too many baskets that night, but she sure has hit a lot since. She entered this, her senior season, with over 1,000 points scored. And currently, she is on a torrid pace. If all she does is stay with her average 28.6 ppg, she'll end up with over 500 points for this season alone! That'll put her, when it's all said and done, in the 1500+ club. Not too bad for a player just a smidge over five foot tall.
Telisha Turner is simply one of the very best girls to play point in this State. Ever. Consider that this season she scored 33 against St. E's, 37 against Delcastle, and 39 against Ursuline. These are not creampuff programs! These are teams that can play great defense. Typically, she is double and even triple teamed right from the opening buzzer. Tom and I were at the Ursuline game. In the first half, it looked like her shot was off and that she was having a bad night. Yet, we kept track of her scoring as the night wore on and were practically in awe and disbelief when our own tally sheet got to 30. Even on a bad night, TT can light it up.
And now, she heads into her own "final lap." The last ten regular season high school games of her career. She has been a joy to follow over the years. No player is more fun to watch or to root for. She never got the big time press and notoriety that others received. Part of that is due, no doubt, to the fact that she did not play for an elite school program. Imagine how legendary she'd be had she played for Sanford or St. Mark's or Ursuline. Be that as it may, Telisha Turner was and is one of the best. Tom and I wish her nothing but the best in her future, and we hope she does just as well or better in college ball. In the meantime, thanks, TT, for the dazzling, impossible shots that only you could make. Thanks also for always being nice to us and for always greeting us with a warm smile and a wave.
