Angels 12U Brings Home the Gold from Beach Bound II

(Posted 6-16-09)

The 12U Angels returned to Ocean City, MD this past weekend to play in Beach Bound II and improve on their second place finish in Beach Bound I.  The schedule had us playing our first game at 10pm Friday night (that's right, 10pm Friday night!) against the AB Future which is sponsored by Alana Beard of Duke and WNBA fame.  Defense ruled as the first half ended 10-8 in favor of the Angels. With our girls struggling from the outside, we managed to win 28-18 by feeding the ball inside and making our foul shots. Twelve of the 28 points came from the stripe while the other 16 were earned in the paint. The defense forced 26 turnovers while Sabrina Hackendorn led the way offensively with 18 points and seven rebounds (10 of 14 from the foul line).

Game two against the Bel-Air Wildcats was a blowout as all 12 girls recorded at least one steal. In this game, the defense forced 22 turnovers and the offense was balanced as Emma Matthews and Rachel Liszkiewycz led the way with seven points each.

In game three against one of two MD Elite teams entered in the tourney, the Angels jumped out to a 15-3 halftime lead and never looked back on their way to a 33-14 win. Emma Matthews' 8 points and Sabrina's 5 points, 7 rebounds and seven steals led the team as 9 of eleven girls scored and the defense continued to be dominant and suffocating. This was a team victory that landed us in the championship game against the other MD Elite team. Our girls were fired up for this game due to a season opening loss to this same team back in April. This turned out to be the game of the weekend as the Angels quickly got out to a 7 point lead but led by only one at halftime, 16-15. In the second half they had a ten point advantage only to see the MD Elite come back and take a one point lead twice in the final minute.  With 16 seconds remaining and trailing by one, Emma Matthews made one of her many on the money lob passes to Sabrina on the right block. With three defenders all over her, Sabrina made a difficult eight-footer to take back the lead. After a phantom foul call with 9 seconds left the MD Elite took the lead on two free throws. This set the stage for some last second heroics by Claudia Seemans.  Taking a pass at the far end of the court, Claudia sped down the right sideline (right in front of the team bench), drove the baseline and went past just about every defender on her way to an unbelievable reverse layup as the buzzer sounded and the Angels knocked off the previously once beaten and nationally ranked MD Elite 33-32. It was a scene I'll never forget as all of the Angels stormed onto the floor and mobbed Claudia. Sabrina had 18 points and 10 rebounds and Claudia scored seven points to lead the Angels to a first place finish. Even the referees and tournament director were saying what a great game it was. Several of the girls received compliments from the referees and directors throughout the weekend. The whole team is playing tough, disciplined ball as we prepare for the nationals in July.

I know it seems as though the same girls are being mentioned in the articles and stats , but every girl plays a major part in the success of this team. They should all be very proud of themselves.

Angels Extend Undefeated Streak to 29 - 0

Best 11U Record in the State

(Posted 06-09-09)

The Delaware Angels 11U team went to the Maryland Flames "Getting Hot" Tournament June 6-7 in Gaithersburg MD.  In the first game the Angels played the Hoops Magic team from Northern Virginia, a Div 1 Nationals Qualifying team, who according to team parents finished real well in last years nationals.  The Angels won 50-31 playing a real strong game.  Adrianna (17), Caroline (12), and Renada (9) lead the scoring.   In the second game the Angels played the Mustangs who I believe are from Fairfax Co and prevailed 45-31 with strong contributions from all the girls with Micah Morgan stepping up with the scoring leaders with 8 points.  The third game of the day had the Angels playing against a very strong 10 year old Vogue team.  The Angels won 38-31 and never trailed however perhaps underestimated their opponent and were somewhat fatigued.

In the final game of the weekend on Sunday the Angels played the Matrix from Potomac Valley and prevailed 42-23.  We discussed the importance of warming up properly and being mentally focused and the girls came out on fire in the first half leading 27-8 and finished the game 42-23.  In the second half Katelyn, Megan, Carolanne, and Alyssa demonstrated that how they have improved dramatically since the beginning of the year and how they are important contributors to the team.  Carolanne and Alyssa have not even begun to reach their potential but have all the necessary tools and a great attitude.  Megan and Katelyn, both 5th graders, are getting tremendous experience and gaining confidence playing against high level competition which will help them tremendously in CYO.  Adrianna and Caroline have brought a strong inside-outside punch all year though both players are very versatile and can play anywhere on the court; Renada is shooting the ball extremely well expanding into 3 point range consistently; Micah is rebounding aggressively and stepping out into her range and showing her versatility; After a beginning of the year injury Shannon is playing very confidently, shooting well, and peaking at the right time; Claire and Courtney continue to play tough as nails and prove time after time that the size of player does not compare to the size of their heart.  They often get the most oohs and aahs after being underestimated by the spectators!

The Angels record in "official" tournament games is now 29-0 making up for being somewhat undersized by having a lot of skill and determination.  We were invited to play a round robin "nationals warm up" against the Mid Atlantic Magic, Comets, the Jersey Shore Wildcats  on June 20 and then we are off to the Nationals in Indiana which begin June 26.  Thanks to Mid Atlantic for the invite and looking us up on DGB (thanks Jim!) - we are looking forward to a great day of ball and barbecue!  Jim - You do a great job of promoting girls basketball in Delaware and all the Angels, especially the 11's, want to thank you and commend you for a job well done!

Angel 14U Keeps on Rollin'

(Posted 6/08/09)

The Delaware Angels 14U girls team went to the Philadelphia Belles tournament May 30 and 31st and finished 3-1. We had a nice weekend of play winning both games on Saturday over the Connecticut Cougars by 12 and the Royersford Rockets by 5. The girls played a swarming man to man defense and it frustrated the opponents and created many good scoring chances for our girls in transition. Kayla Goodge and Maddy Lang led the defensive effort for the team in both games. Offensively Kelly Perillo and Maddy Lang along with good scoring games from Emily Houck and Hannah Nitsche keyed the wins.

On Sunday, we played our first game against a very good Philadelphia Belles squad. We missed several good scoring chances from the field and the line in the first half and fell behind by 11 at half to a much taller and very skilled opponent. In the second half we more than held our own and ended up playing a very competitive game losing in the end by 12. In the second game we played another quality team from the Chester County Wizards program our second time seeing them this season. We played an almost flawless game on both sides of the court winning by 15. We were led again on Sunday by Kelly Perillo and Maddy Lang on the offensive side with a lot of help from Meghan Carter and again played very aggressive defensive basketball in both games. Kayla Goodge, Erica Brown, Jaclyn Purzycki and Catherine Herron all play very good defense and as a group we are in all of our games due to this type of effort. Overall the entire team gave a great effort again in this tournament and we are looking forward to the Hershey tournament in late June to see how we stack up against some of the regions best teams.

Left to right, above:  Erika Brown looks to pass; Kelly Perillo in a happy moment; Meghan Carter in an even happier moment.

Tiger Tens Notch More Impressive Victories

(Posted 6/08/09)

Team picture courtesy Wilmington Tigers.

The Wilmington Tigers 10U participated in Penn-Jersey at Atlantic City Classic on June 6-7.   The Tigers opened up the weekend against Kyniska Hoops 10A.  Kyniska came out looking to avenge the 25 point win the Tigers had at the Mid-Atlantic Division I Regionals.  The Tigers came out ready and won easily 17-7.  The Tigers again had balanced scoring and were led by Kailyn and Alena’s 4, with Alyssa adding 3, and Emilie H, Maggie and Annie each adding a bucket.  The next game had the Tigers outmatching Lower Delco’s 9A team.  As sometime happens a good 9U team usually find themselves playing up due to few 9U teams in the area.  The final was 30-9 with Nina leading all scores with 10.  Emilie H pitched in another 5, while Alyssa and Maggie added 4 apiece, and Kailyn, Annie and Alena each had 2.

The Tigers found Sunday to be much more exciting.   In the first of 2 close games, the Tigers faced South Jersey Storm.  The Storm have 4 players that stand very close to 6 feet tall.  They placed second at the Super-Regionals, and 4th at the Mid-Atlantic Division I DQT.  If the much smaller Tigers were intimidated they never showed it and the score was tied at 20 at the half.  At this point the area around the court became more and more crowed as other spectators came to watch one of the more exciting games of the weekend.  During the second half the lead changed hands several times until the Tigers found themselves up by 5 with about four minutes to play.  Unfortunately, a turnover that led to a layup, followed by a 3 pointer by a Storm player that was otherwise scoreless was all it took to tie the game once again.  At that time the Storm’s sheer size prevailed and the Tigers lost 41-37.  The Tigers were led by Gabby and Nina who each struck 2 three pointers and a basket for their 8.  Kailyn added another 7, while Julia had a hard-fought 6 points.  Alyssa had another 4 points, and Alena and Maggie each had 2 points to go along with a number of assist apiece.  The way these two point guards handled the pressure of much larger players was amazing. Especially for Maggie who is a 3rd grader playing up 2 grade levels.  The team did a fine job overall handling the pressure of a much larger opponent, especially the forwards who fought hard to keep their much taller counter parts off of the boards while staying out of foul trouble (no forward post player had more than one foul).  In fact, the entire Tiger team only had 7 fouls.

The following game’s opponent was the South Jersey Lightning who had beaten the SJ Storm by 5 points on Saturday.  Both teams came out strong.  The Lightning had another near 6-footer who played nicely inside and outside and she began the game with a 3 pointer (she led all scorers with 15).  At half time the Tigers were down 25-20.  The second half went the same and with about 2 minutes left in the game, the Tigers were still down by five.  Alyssa hit a huge 2 on a set play and Gabby followed with a game tying 3-pointer.  With under a minute to go after a missed Lightning foul shot, the Lightning appeared to have secured the rebound in the paint when Tiger post player Julia came away with the ball.  She came down to grab a hard fought for offensive board and nailed the put back to put the Tigers ahead by 2, 37-35.  The Tigers defense took over and the Lighting never got another shot off.  We found out later that the Lightning were undefeated at 13-0.  Gabby led the Tigers with 11 including the game tying 3 pointer.  Maggie had 8 with two 3 pointers and a field goal.  Alena added 7 with  a 3-pointer of her own.  Emilie H had 4, Kailyn had 3 for the foul line, and Alyssa and Julia each added 2 points at critical points in the game.

The Tigers finished the weekend 3-1 and played on 2 of the more exciting games of the tournament and 2 of the most exciting 10U games that the coaches and parents have seen.   They have qualified for the 2nd year in a row to play at the Division 2 National Championships in Orlando July15-20th.  They will finish out the regular season at next weekend’s Comet’s Tournament.

Angel 12U Report

(Posted 6-08-09)

This weekend the 12U Angels traveled to Gaithersburg, MD to play in the "Flames Gettin' Hot" tournament. The first game was Saturday morning at 9am. This early time slot doesn't seem to agree with our girls for some reason and that trend continued for a little while until we finally got some shots to fall. In this game against the Gettysburg Chillies the effort was there but the first half was a real struggle as we found ourselves down 19-3 early on and 24-12 at halftime.  After a very confident and supportive locker room speech from coaches Tobin and Seemans the girls came out and scored the first seven points of the second half off of turnovers and fast breaks. Showing more intensity and focus our girls came storming back to take a twelve point lead and hold off the Chillies for a 48-41 come from behind victory. Game 2 against the Glade Valley Lions wasn't close as the Angels led 25-10 at the half and finished off the Lions by a score of 57-25.

Sunday morning's first game was against the Cardinals from Alexandria,VA. The Cardinals had beaten the Philadelphia Belles on Saturday by 10 points so we were looking forward to a very tough matchup. Neither team disappointed as the Angels hustled and fought to stay within six points at halftime, 24-18. With both teams effectively pressing and trapping, points were hard to come by.  The Cardinals were able to hold off our girls 43-38, but we certainly earned the respect of those who had gathered to watch as the game went on. In the second game on Sunday against the WHC Comets, the Angels scoring was balanced as 9 out of 11 girls scored en route to a 37-18 win. The final game of the weekend ,and our 3rd in four hours had us facing a small but aggressive Queens Express team that was much tougher than they looked. The first half was close but constant pressure all the way to the final buzzer wore down the Express as the Angels gradually pulled away for a 43-30 victory.

The girls enjoyed a successful weekend by going four and one against teams we had never seen before and also found time to go out and have some well deserved fun at the waterpark and the movies.  Those who didn't venture out for the excitement got some much needed rest back at the hotel and enjoyed spending time with each other talking about everything but basketball. Next week we're off to Ocean City, MD for Beach Bound II (and hopefully some boardwalk fun).

How Many Other Delaware AAU Teams Are 25 - 0 on the Season?

Belles Invitational Extends Angels 11U Winning Streak

(Posted 6-03-09)

Left to Right:
Front row:  Cameron and Michael Wallace

Second Row:  Renada L’Italien, Courtney Wallace, Megan Mallon, Katelyn Wolf

Third Row: Caroline Davis, Alyssa Simmons, Adrianna Hahn, Carolanne Deal, Micah Morgan

Missing from photo (but in the other team photo on the webpage) are Shannon Tobin & Claire Igo.

Game 1 was against JKMBA, who according to very reliable sources, was upset with the schedulers in that they did not feel like they would get any competition.  The Angels, playing without their mainstay center Caroline Davis on Saturday, due to her sister's graduation from UD, were down by 14 points in the first half.  They fought long and hard to come back and take a one point lead with 40 seconds left - but a bench technical for excessive timeouts (not called by the head coach!) allowed JKMBA to tie up the game and get the ball.  Adrianna got a rebound with about 10 seconds left and made a long outlet to Renada who scored with 5 seconds left to seal the win.  A very gratifying hard fought win - Adrianna scored 15;  Renada 12 and Courtney made clutch shots down the end.  Shannon gave excellent contributions during critical times of the game.  Claire Igo is a joy to coach and is a lockdown defender who always gives 100%.  On Saturday, she was very pivotal in our comeback against JKMBA by wreaking havoc all over the court.  She also is a very trustworthy ballhandler, which is hard to find at this age.

The second game on Saturday was against the Sparks "A" - The Angels won 33-27.  Adrianna (16 points) was Adrianna.  Micah, 9 points, made some clutch baskets to help seal the win and Carolanne was much needed physical presence in the game, especially on the boards.

On Sunday the Angels defeated the Staten Island Rebels (45-26) in the first game.  Returning Sunday, Caroline was true to form scoring 12 and igniting our full court press.  Megan Mallon made a beautiful reverse layup and had some outstanding defensive plays.  Katelyn Wolf was very scrappy on the offensive boards and had a very nice basket.  Alyssa Simmons had some nice break away layups and was a big presence on the boards.  In the second game the Angels defeated the NJ Sting (42-18).  Very balanced scoring and a strong effort by all the girls.

The Angels are now 25-0 in official games according to Courtney Wallace - they lost a close game against a 12 year old team in Ocean City that was impromptly scheduled at my request that she does not include in the standings.  In reality are some very strong 11 year old teams out there that we have not played (Fencor A, Comets A) so we are by no means a dynasty.  However this team has accomplished a lot and is an excellent group of girls to coach.  They just all need to keep working hard!

Angels 12U Report

(Posted 06-01-09)

The 12U Angels played in the Belles Invitational this weekend. On Saturday, in Aston, PA they started off by beating the 13U Dream Makers Academy by a score of 54-36. Frontcourt and backcourt play were strong throughout the entire game. Balanced scoring and team defense were the keys to this victory. Later in the day, they lost 60-39 to the Belles in a fast-paced, up-tempo game that seemed to leave our girls a little tired for their third game of the day, a 54-32 loss to the Lady Bulldogs. The game against the Bulldogs was very physical but our girls had already given two strong efforts earlier in the day and couldn't be faulted for running out of gas.

Sunday was a much more successful day with two lopsided victories. Against the United BBall Navy the Angels held a five point lead at the half but dominated the second half to win 53-32. In the second game on Sunday they beat the Delmont Blaze 48-13.

The girls showed their pride (and healing powers) by coming back strong on the second day after playing three physical and hard fought games on Saturday. Whether up by twenty or down by twenty our girls were constantly diving for loose balls and giving maximum effort up to the final buzzer.  There were plenty of bruises and ice packs to prove it!

Angels 11U Report

(Posted 5-19-09)

The 11U  girls won the Charm City National Invitational Tournament in Baltimore this weekend.  Championship game was against the Vougues from Northern Virginia - a well known and very strong organization.  We went 5-0.  In the  championship we won 38-28 (I believe was the final - don't have the stats in front of me) and came back from a 5 point second half deficit  with about 5-6 minutes left.  We got some really nice trophies!

The Wilmington Tigers 10U participated in the KOP Invitational Tournament May 16-17 where they went 4-0.  This came a week after going 1-3 in Mid-Atlantic Division 1 Regionals.  After 2 years of competing in Division 2, the Tigers  10U team competed in Division 1 DQT where  we went 1-1 in pool play.    During the course of the DQT we played both the champion, the Comets, as well as the runners up, Fencor.  Unfortunately, our first game in  single elimination bracket play was against the eventual champion the Comets.  We played both teams very tough and the coaches saw much improvement during the course of that weekend.  Despite missing qualifying for Division 1 Nationals by one game, we will be participating in Division 2 Nationals for the second year.

This weekend the Tigers 10u came out strong and never looked back. We won all four games by large margins using all 11 players equally.  We continue to play at the "A" level and will do so leading up to Nationals.  We will be off a week before competing in the Renegades Summer Rumble May 30-31st.

Delaware Angels 14U Qualifies for Nationals!!!

(Posted 5-18-09)

We entered the Mid-Atlantic Regionals on May 8-10. We played Friday night against the Lehigh Valley Outcasts and won a close game 44-40. We then played on Saturday against the New Jersey Magic winning by 13. This left us as the winner of our pool and seeded first in the elimination bracket for Sunday. We won again Sunday morning by 13 and then played the Wilmington Tigers in the semifinals. This was a good game as all of the girls knew each other and many have played together on the same teams in the past. The Angels prevailed by 8 wining 37-29. We then proceeded to the finals against the same Lehigh Valley Outcasts that we played on Friday night. We led in the first half by 10 points but fatigue set in as we were playing with only 5 healthy girls in our third game of the day and the outcasts won the final by 13, 39-26. It was a very nice weekend for the Angels though as we finished second in the regional tournament and qualified for nationals with the effort.

Over the weekend all of the girls played significant roles in the wins, with Maddy Lang, Kayla Goodge and Catherine Herron controlling the ball at point and off guard, Hannah Nitsche, Emily Houck, Jaclyn Purzycki and Michelle Lonergan working well in the forward roles and Meghan Carter and Kelly Perillo doing their typically good work underneath and around the basket. Erica Brown also was on the bench all weekend assisting the coaches but unable to play with a concussion from soccer. It truly was a great team effort by all the girls beating teams that has been together practicing and playing for many months and or years versus our girls that just recently got together and enjoy playing as a team. We have many girls that are playing soccer and volleyball and thus we do not practice very much and in fact have had only 4 practices to date this spring.

We are going to continue with the spring and summer season playing in the Belles tournament May 30 and 31st and then in Hershey June 27-30 and then off to Nationals in Hampton, Virginia in late July.

Delaware Angels 12U Are National Qualifiers!!!

(Posted 5-11-09)

The 12U Angels qualified for the 'B' Nationals this weekend by winning the regional tournament in Marlton, NJ.  The girls went undefeated in five games winning by an average of 22 points.  They beat the York Unity 53 -43 on Friday night.  On Saturday they defeated the Lower Bucks Lightning 50 - 25 and the Mid Penn Motion 66 - 35. In the semi-finals on Sunday they won 65 - 33 over the Rockers to earn a spot in the finals against perennial powerhouse Fencor.  In the championship game both teams started off slow offensively but solid on defense with the Angels leading 16 - 10 at halftime.  The second half proved to be more exciting with the Angels pulling away for a 48 -35 win and the right to go to Fort Myers, FL to play in the Nationals.

Claudia Seemans, Rachel Liszkiewicz, and Sabrina Hackendorn led the team statistically. Cassidy Flanagan provided solid all around play at just about every position at both ends of the floor.  Smothering defensive play and lots of hustle by Emma Matthews, Laura Hurff, and Adrianna Hahn, and tough inside play from Maddy Waegele, Hannah Schlegel, and Caroline Davis all played a major part in the winning weekend.  Paige Lacek and Shannon "Dustmop"  Tobin also made the most of their time when asked to contribute off the bench.  Hannah Gladnick was having a very strong tournament before injuring an ankle early in the third game.

All of the girls truly believe in the team concept and life lessons being taught by coaches Mark Tobin and Dale Seemans.

Wilmington Tigers 13U Coach's Report

Rams/Lightning Challenge

(posted 4-27-09)

The Wilmington Tigers 13U team went 2-2 this weekend at the Rams/Lightning Challenge in West Chester, PA.  The Tigers have played hard and well in the first two tournaments against A brackets teams and losing by 5 points in 4 tough games.  In the Rams/Lightning tournament the Tigers played extremely well and the players feel more comfortable playing together.  Especially, with 6 new players added to the roster.  Two victories came against the Chesco Lightning with a score of 52-12 and the Philadelphia Belles 14U 42-36.

Against the Chesco Lightning and the Belles there was balanced scoring, rebounding and defense by the entire team.  Scoring (Chesco) – Natalia Romero 9, Kathleen Moore 4, Katie Dodds 4, Nay Mojica 4, Jaclyn Purzycki 5, Liz Bates 10, Shelby Cochran 4 and Erin Dodds 12.  Rebounding was led by Amanda Brown-Diaz, Nay Mojica, Kathleen Moore, Jaclyn Purzycki, Shelby Cochran and Katie Dodds.

Against the Belles 14U the team played extremely well especially against a team that was much taller, larger and stronger inside.  The Tigers took the challenge and did not back down.  Again, another balanced attack scoring and rebounding, good ball movement and attacking the basket.  Scoring – Natalia Romero 8, Kathleen Moore 6, Katie Dodds 5, Nay Mojica 2, Jaclyn Purzycki 6, Liz Bates 4, Shelby Cochran 8 and Erin Dodds 3.  Rebounding was lead by Shelby Cochran, Kathleen Moore, Jaclyn Purzycki, Nay Mojica, Amanda Brown-Diaz, and Katie Dodds.

The two loses were against the Chester County Wizards and the Fab Falcons.  Both loses were by 5 points.  The team is coming together and playing hard basketball prior to 13U District Qualifier next week at Willingboro, NJ.

Katie Dodds of the Wilmington Tigers crashes into Mary Beth Abram of the Chester County Wizards.  Both girls attend Delaware schools and have appeared on DGB.com in the past.

The Padua-bound Kathleen Moore takes a shot from the lower block.  Kathleen takes care of so many duties on the court she should get paid time-and-a-half!

Shelby Cochran wrestles with a wizard.  Hey!  That doesn't look like Hermione!

DMA-bound Liz Bates looks over her options under pressure.  We always knew she was tremendous as an outside shooter, but with the Tigers, Liz showed off her cut-and-slash skills.  In the space of 3 minutes, we saw her hit three layups.  One from the left side, one from the right and one straight up the middle!  A real nice display of putting the ball in the hoop.  With the Tigers, too, she gets to play some point guard -- a position she didn't see much of at St. John the Beloved.  Experience at the point is only going to make her better still.

We showed you Kathleen Moore underneath.  Here she is out on the arc with a shot.

Natalia Romero runs a lot of 1-guard for the Tigers.  What you don't see here is her uncanny ability to get a lot of rebounds for a point guard.  She'll come out of nowhere, leap 3 feet into the air, and snag the ball while everyone else is flat-footed on the ground.  Rebounds win games.

Erin Dodds checks the flight of the ball on a free throw.

Jaclyn Purzycki showing pretty good shooting form despite her right hand being wrapped up.

Natalia Romero was called for a foul on this play, but it also looks like Katie Dodds is about to make contact, too.
