iPOW
(Most Recent Winners Listed First)
July 29, 2009
Impact Player of the Week - Week Ending August 1, 2009
Jade Wharton -
Howard

Height:
5' 7"
Current Class: Will be junior.
Years Varsity: Will be 3rd.
Positions
Played: Shooting Guard / Forward
Other
Interests: Volleyball & Track
Biggest
Basketball Influence: Val Whiting & Marissa Coleman
Probable
College: Uncommitted
How'd she iPOW? We could give her an
iPOW simply for liking Marissa Coleman. But that's not how
we roll at DGB.com. Like everyone else, Jade had to earn
it. And earn it, she did. In a pressure game, the
Gold Division Finals of the 2009 High School Summer League, Jade
led all scorers with 12 points, played great defense, and was an
on-court rallying point for her teammates. With only half
of her high school career in the books, we look for Jade Wharton
to do some outstanding things on the basketball court in the
next two winter seasons.
July 24, 2009
Impact Player of the Week - Week Ending July 25, 2009
Jazmin Johnson
- Hodgson Vo-Tech

Height:
5' 3"
Current Class: Will be sophomore.
Years Varsity: Will be 2nd.
Positions
Played: Point Guard
Other
Interests: Just basketball
Biggest
Basketball Influence: Her uncle
Probable
College: Uncommitted
How'd she iPOW? While 10 points in a
game might not sound like a lot, Jazmin was the only player for
either team to score in double-digits in the 2009 Summer League
Championship Game (Hodgson vs. St. Mark's). Moreover, her
blazing speed, ability to protect the ball, and varied shot
selection (had a three-pointer to go along with lane drive
layups and mid-range jumpers) were weapons that St. Mark's had
trouble coping with all game long. This performance
definitely puts Jazmin on the map as a standout player to watch
in the '09/'10 winter season and will force a lot of folks to
consider her name when discussing the 3 or 4 best point guards
in the state.
March 15, 2009
Co-Impact Player
of the Week - Week Ending March 14, 2009
Ashley Robbins
- Delcastle Vo-Tech

Height:
5' 6" Current Class:
Senior Years Varsity:
3
Team
Captain: Yes Positions
Played: Guard
Other
Interests: Softball, Track
Biggest
Basketball Influence: Lebron James
Probable
College: Norfolk State University
How'd she iPOW? Ashley was a human tornado
in the State Championship Game. Her 23 points were just 1
behind Jaquetta May's total for the game. Her 11 steals were
off the page! Seven steals better than any other player in
that game. Steals, as a category, is not kept track of in
connection with State Tournament records, however, her 11 could be
in record territory. While Delcastle is a complete team and
not pretend champions by any means, it was Robbins' singular effort,
more than anyone else's, that put the Lady Cougars over the top.
March 15, 2009
Co-Impact Player
of the Week - Week Ending March 14, 2009
Chelsea Davis
- Middletown High School
(Accepted the
Award / Declined the T-shirt)

Height:

Senior Years Varsity:
4
Team
Captain: 1 year Positions
Played: The 4
Other
Interests: Art, Animation
Biggest
Basketball Influence: My Family
Probable
College: Florida State University
How'd she iPOW? Chelsea had 31 points in
the semis and 30 in the finals, making a huge statement for prolific
AND consistent scoring. Scored 15 points in 6 1/2 minutes of
the final quarter of the Championship Game. Anyway you slice
it, Chelsea Davis lives out the meaning of the term "Impact Player."
The best low-post in the First State.
March 8, 2009
Co-Impact Player
of the Week - Week Ending March 7, 2009
Caroline Davis - Holy Angels
St. E's League Team

Height:
5' 7" Current Class:
6th Grade
Positions
Played: Forward, Center
Other
Interests: Volleyball & Swimming
Biggest
Basketball Influence: Elena Delle Donne
Probable
High School: Uncommitted
How'd she iPOW?
Davis led her team through peerless
rebounding, great defense, very good passing and, oh yes, 11 points
– a total that led all scorers in the St. Elizabeth’s League
Championship Game, 2009 Edition. She is a player in the Kelly
Johnson (Padua Academy) mold – she does everything quietly and
without notice. Everything, that is, except play basketball. On
the court, how can you not notice her? One of the top 3 or 4
players in the St. E’s League, and, most likely, one of the top 5 or
6 players in her age bracket in the State of Delaware. She has all
the tools, and this ain’t just talk. Watch her play. If you find a
weakness in her game, you email us, because we can’t find one.
March 3, 2009
Co-Impact Player
of the Week - Week Ending March 7, 2009
Haley
Schweizer - Holy Angels CYM

Height:
5' 5" Current Class:
8th Grade Years Varsity: 2
Team
Captain Positions
Played: 1, 2 & 3
Other
Interests: Lacrosse & Field Hockey
Biggest
Basketball Influence: Michael Jordan
Probable
High School: St. Mark's
How'd she iPOW? Led all scorers with 12
points in the CYM C1 Finals (game played March 1, 2009). Only
seemed to get stronger as the game wore on. Haley impressed
DGB.com earlier in the year at the St. John's tournament, so we
already knew going into the CYM Championship Playoffs what a great
talent she is. Amazing speed in the open, will take on
multiple defenders all the way to the basket. Maintains energy
level from tip-off to final buzzer. Considering that in the
finals, her team won by just a basket, Holy Angels needed every one
of her points.
March 1, 2009
Impact Player
of the Week - Week Ending February 28, 2009
Katherine
Durbano - St. Mark's High School, JV

Height:
5' 3" Current Class:
Freshman
Positions
Played: Guard
Other
Interests: Hanging out with friends; Shopping; Volleyball
Biggest
Basketball Influence: Larry Foreacre & Allen Iverson
Potential College:
University of Delaware
How'd she iPOW? In the Finals of the 2009
Catholic Conference JV Tournament, Katherine nailed 5
three-pointers. In so doing, she led all scorers with 15
points. Her Spartans prevailed over runner-up Ursuline
Academy, 49 - 37. Along with having a nice shooting touch,
Durbano has a good head for the game, developed over several seasons
of CYM ball at St. John the Beloved and AAU for the Wildcats.
We look for continued good progress in this talented player.
February 21, 2009
Impact Player
of the Week - Week Ending February 21, 2009
Dara Taylor -
Caravel Academy

Height:
5' 5" Current Class:
Senior Years Varsity: 4
Positions
Played: Point Guard / Wing Team
Captain: 3 years
Other
Interests: Football, Shopping
Biggest
Basketball Influence: Chris Paul
College:
Maryland
How'd she iPOW? Taylor scored 22 points to
lead all scorers in a 53 - 41 victory over Padua. It was a
revenge performance of sorts. A year ago, the heavily favored
Bucs lost to Padua. Taylor, while scoring in the teens that
night, did not have her best game. For as many great games as
Dara Taylor has had in front of us over the last two seasons (as
long as the iPOW has been in existence), it's one of those strange,
unexplained anomalies that she is only now receiving her just due.
In the Padua victory, she was typical Dara -- scoring, being a
nuisance on defense, breaking up plays, and most importantly,
leading her team. A well-deserved and long overdue
recognition.
February 8, 2009
Impact Player
of the Week - Week Ending February 7, 2009
Leigh Ann
Lennon - Holy Angels CYM Varsity

Height:
5' 8" Current Class:
8th Grade Years Varsity: 3
Positions
Played: Guard
Other
Interests: Cross Country, Music, Hanging Out with Friends
Biggest
Basketball Influence: Elena Delle Donne
Probable
High School: Uncommitted
How'd she iPOW? Leigh Ann Lennon was a key
ingredient that propelled the Holy Angels varsity C team to the
championship of the Sherwood Park Shootout (Finals held 2/7/09).
Averaged 10 ppg over the semi-finals and finals, including a solid
14 point performance in the Title Game. Lennon is always a
beacon of steadiness on the court and a player her teammates look to
to get them over tough, pressure situations. DGB.com weren't
the only folks to honor Lennon during this tournament. She was
also named to the Sherwood Park Shootout All-Tournament Team for
2009.

Winning Criteria
1. Only players that appear
in games covered by DelawareGirlsBasketball.com are eligible.
This will average about one game per week (in-season), though some
weeks will feature 2 (or more) and other weeks none. DGB.com
will make every effort to cover a variety of schools and conferences
so that iPOW winners will come from all over. DGB.com is not
associated with any particular school or group of schools.
DGB.com is not a recruiting service, nor does it engage in
recruiting activity.
2. While primarily a high
school award, if DGB.com is covering a non-high school girls game
(such as CYM, public junior high, AAU, etc.), those players are all
eligible for the award.
3. DGB.com reserves the
right to withhold an iPOW Award after games where it is determined
that no one earned it.
4. DGB.com reserves the
right to award multiple iPOW awards for a single game.
(...Meaning 2 or more girls can win from one game, although this
would be very rare.)
5. iPOW winners do not
necessarily have to be on the winning team.
6. iPOW winners are not
asked to or required to do any service for DGB.com in return.
7. No other "prize",
material or monetary gain is extended from DGB.com to the iPOW
winners.
8. Any player offered the
award who requests not to be mentioned on the DGB.com website will
have the award revoked. (In other words, if you don't want
your name associated with the award, then you don't want the award
very much.)
9. DGB.com reserves any and
all other rights not specifically detailed on this page in
connection with this award.
NB: On May 7, 2008, in phone
conversation with Marie Dillon at NCAA Headquarters, it was verbally
agreed that the iPOW award is "NCAA-legal" (my quotes, not hers).
The gist of the NCAA's concerns being that the award does not
consist of any money changing hands and that the website has no ties
to any particular school's booster club or athletic department.
The NCAA also requires that DGB.com not be a recruiting service.
(We are not a recruiting service.)
Other than those ground rules,
which DGB.com has been in FULL COMPLIANCE WITH, our iPOW Award is
acceptable to the NCAA, according to Ms. Dillon, and will not
jeopardize any recipient with possible/potential NCAA sanctions.
The following is taken verbatim
from an email dated May 14, 2008 from Marie Dillon of the NCAA:
Dear Mr. Charles,
This
email is to follow-up from the conversation we had last week
regarding your website. Per our conversation, your
questions were regarding providing prospective student
athletes (PSA) with a t-shirt and picture on a website with
the PSA’s qualifications and achievements. Per our
legislation, providing the PSA’s with a t-shirt, a picture
and information on your website would be permitted provided
several criteria is met. The award would need to be
uniform for all athletes, the criteria for winning the
award would need to be the same for all athletes, the award
does not include cash, it is not being provided by a
booster of an institution, and no recruiting is involved.
Sincerely,
Marie Dillon
