Impact Player of the Week - Week Ending February 18, 2012

Amber Genwright - Sanford School

Height:  5' 3"

Current Class:  Senior

Positions Played:  PG

Years on Varsity:  4

Team Captain:  Yes / Senior Year

Other Interests:  Art

Biggest Basketball Influence:  Jawan Carter (her brother)

Probable College:  Uncommitted

How'd she iPOW?  On Senior Recognition Day at Sanford (Feb. 18, 2012), in a game against Smyrna, Amber provided most of the offensive punch that kept Sanford in the game during the first half.  She ended up with 14 points, nearly 6 points higher than her season average, and was killer on defense, moving the ball, and setting up teammates.  While GWU signee, Anjaleace White, had 4 more points on the day, it was Genwright who set the emotional tone and pace of the Lady Warriors' game.

Amber was made a team captain prior to the game.  In November of 2008, her coach, Marcus Thompson, had this to say about Amber:

Amber Genwright joins our program this year.  She is a talented freshman who is a natural point guard.  Amber has a great feel for the game.  She has a knack for scoring, but her best asset is that she is a born leader.  She will make those around her better for years to come.  Her leadership qualities may be hereditary as she is the sister of Jawan Carter who will be starring for Coach Ross at the U of D this year.

Impact Player of the Week - Week Ending February 11, 2012

Megan Mallon - St. John the Beloved

Height:  5' 5"

Current Class:  8th Grade

Positions Played:  G / PG

Years on Varsity:  Two

Team Captain:  One

Other Interests:  Soccer, Hanging Out with Friends

Biggest Basketball Influence:  Her Dad / Michael Jordan

Probable High School:  Ursuline or Padua

How'd she iPOW?  Try this on for size.  In one calendar day, Saturday, February 11th, she scored 21 points in a regular season CYM game with her St. John the Beloved Eagles.  Later, that night, she led all scorers with 15 points in the Sherwood Park Shootout Varsity Finals to help St. John's capture the tourney championship.  Oh yeah.  She also -- same night -- was involved in a three-way sudden death playoff to decide the winner of the varsity three-point contest for the tournament, and she won that, as well.  Did we mention that she was named to the All-Tournament team, too?  Quite an amazing day!  In the photo above, she is showing off her loot:  All-Tournament plaque, Three-Point Contest Winner plaque, and her Insta Signs Plus iPOW t-shirt!

February 8, 2012

Impact Player of the Week - Week Ending February 11, 2012

Nyjae Dickerson - Brandywine High School

Height:  5' 3"

Current Class:  Senior

Positions Played:  PG / SG

Years on Varsity:  Four

Other Interests:  Drawing

Biggest Basketball Influence:  Rajon Rondo

College:  Johnson C. Smith University

How'd she iPOW?  Nyjae is an iPOW "first."  She is the first player to earn the award for the game in which she scored her 1,000th point.  But, it was not for that point, but rather, her 26 other points, that she earned the recognition.  Although she started off cold in the first quarter, she began finding her stroke, and by game's end, she was leading scorer with 27 points.  Had she not scored a single point, her Brandywine Bulldogs would still have won the game (as it was, a 29-point victory over conference rival Mt. Pleasant).  But, Dickerson still made an impact nevertheless!

Nyjae scoring her 1,000th point in the same game.

I have actually known Nyjae since she was born. I grew up playing baseball with her father at Wilmington Little League on 18th and Van Buren. Nyjae is a pure athlete who would be able to play whichever sport she decided to pursue.  We are glad that she chose to play basketball at Brandywine High School.  She was a playground legend at 30th Street Park. She was an "and one" mixtape player.  She can still do any trick in the book with the basketball. Our Associate Head Coach, Ronnie Potts (guard coach), has done a great job helping her make the transition from the street to the organized game.  Nyjae is a point guard who can run a team as well as score from all areas of the court.

Nyjae is very quiet and soft spoken around people she doesn't know.  But once you get to know her, she is a joker who always has a funny joke to tell.  She is an easy person to be around.

Nyjae means a lot to this team.  She loves Rajon Rondo, PG from the Boston Celtics.  When we walked into the gym in a spring basketball league in PA, girls would say here comes D-Rose, referring to the Chicago Bulls PG Derek Rose. She has the same style as Derek Rose even though she loves and thinks she is Rajon Rondo on the court.  Last spring I told Nyjae to set a goal for herself.  I asked her to train offseason with the 2012 Delaware Girls Basketball Player of the Year on her mind.  She is trying her best each day in practice as well as games to reach her goals.  Last spring, her goals were to score 1000 points, win Flight B, sign letter of intent with a full basketball scholarship and compete for a State Championship.

January 11, 2012

Impact Player of the Week - Week Ending January 14, 2012

Macy Robinson - St. Elizabeth High School

Height:  5' 9"

Current Class:  Sophomore

Positions Played:  PG / SG / F

Years on Varsity:  Three

Other Interests:  Just Basketball

Biggest Basketball Influence:  LeBron James

How'd she iPOW?  Although three of her teammates had 8 points each, it was Macy's 23 points that was the deciding factor in St. Elizabeth's 52 - 47 win over Caesar Rodney (game played January 10, 2012).  Few of her points came easy as the Riders' defense played aggressively all night.  This was a win that St. E's needed badly.  After a 4 - 0 start that had many thinking that the Vikes should be considered as a top level team in the state, the Maroon & Gold then proceeded to drop 3 straight.  A loss, at home, to CR would've put the team at .500 and out of any true consideration for a late tournament appearance at The Bob this year.  So, there was more significance attached to this game than most regular season contests.  It was a big game and Macy rose to the occasion.

December 31, 2011

Impact Player of the Week - Week Ending December 31, 2011

Taylor Bond - Appoquinimink High School

Height:  5' 11"

Current Class:  Junior

Positions Played:  Center/Forward

Years on Varsity:  Three

Other Interests:  Volleyball

Biggest Basketball Influence:  Lisa Leslie

How'd she iPOW?  Although teammates Amani Clark and Ashley Smith had more points over the course of the Diamond State Classic, Bond was a beast on the boards, racking up 10 on Wednesday against Caesar Rodney and a whopping 19 in the B+ Foundation Cup Title Game.  She also scored 14 and 8 points, respectively, over the 2 games.  So, we commend Taylor Bond for her all-around impressive contribution that went far in allowing Appoquinimink to win its bracket in the DSC for the second year in a row.  Lady Jaguar Coach Dan Pisani had this to say about Bond:  “Taylor works so hard every practice.  I don’t know of anyone who is playing low post right now with an all-around better game.”

December 21, 2011

Impact Player of the Week - Week Ending December 24, 2011

Jill Lyons - Ursuline Academy

Height:  6' 0"

Current Class:  Senior

Positions Played:  Center/Forward

Years on Varsity:  Four

Team Captain:  Senior Year

Other Interests:  Volleyball

Biggest Basketball Influence:  Candace Parker

How'd she iPOW?  On a team loaded with guards and very few frontcourt personnel, there is a lot of pressure on players like Jill -- a true 6-foot tall low post player -- to take care of business under the basket.  In Ursuline's home opener against top flight Appoquinimink, perhaps the strongest public school team in the state, Jill answered the call with a strong 14-point night and who knows how many rebounds, blocks and Appo plays broken up.  In short, she had exactly the kind of game the Raiders need from her.  A wonderful effort!

December 12, 2011

Impact Player of the Week - Week Ending December 10, 2011

Victoria Boyd - Padua Academy

Height:  5' 10"

Current Class:  Senior

Positions Played:  Guard/Forward

Years on Varsity:  Four

Team Captain:  Senior Year

Other Interests:  Making people laugh

Biggest Basketball Influence:  Alison Zimny

How'd she iPOW?  Victoria Boyd’s iPOW was a long time coming.  She’s probably deserved it on a dozen or so occasions over the years, but either DGB wasn’t in the house (an iPOW prerequisite) or we were distracted by someone else’s performance.  “V”, as she is known to almost everyone familiar with her, embodies more than anyone the Padua brand of basketball.  She has a style that is no-frills and no nonsense.  She goes at the game with a workman’s stick-to-it-iveness and dedication.  She never complains and always tries to see the bright side of any situation.  In the game that she earned her iPOW (Padua at Tower Hill, December 10, 2011), she co-led (with Julianne Lambert) all scorers with 16 points.  Typically, V scores the lion’s share of her points right under the basket and she has the bruises to prove it.  But on this sunny, brisk Saturday afternoon, she was hitting from all over.  Her rebounding and defensive value to the Pandas is second to none.  In short, Victoria gets it done.  And she got it done big time in this fine 62 – 39 win for Padua.  Special props to V for naming Alison Zimny (a former AAU teammate of V's and a former iPOW winner herself) as her biggest inspiration!

August 2, 2011

Impact Player of the Week - Week Ending August 6, 2011

Renada L'Italien - Delaware Military Academy

Height:  5' 1"

Current Class:  Rising Freshman

Positions Played:  Point Guard

Years on Varsity:  None (yet)

Other Interests:  Volleyball / Hanging Out at the Beach

Biggest Basketball Influence:  Her Dad

How'd she iPOW?  Co-led for top scorer in Gold Division Title Game vs. Delcastle with 13 points, including two three-pointers.  Had the poise and composure of a high school senior all-state player.  Her shot was so "on" that she could've easily scored 20 points, if only she lit it up a little more frequently.  When this was pointed out to her in our post-game interview, Renada said matter-of-factly, "I don't like to hog the ball.  I like to spread it around."  That's a good answer, but we do hope that in the future, when her shot is clicking, she'll dial her own number more often.  Renada was also a force on defense, most likely leading her team in steals and breaking up plays in this game.  A very bright on-court future should await her at DMA.

August 2, 2011

Impact Player of the Week - Week Ending August 6, 2011

Yasmin Walker - Caravel Academy

Height:  5' 6"

Current Class:  Rising Junior

Positions Played:  Guard

Years on Varsity:  3

Team Captain:  This Coming Winter

Other Interests:  Poetry / Drawing

Biggest Basketball Influence:  Renee Montgomery

Probable College:  Undeclared

How'd she iPOW?  Although she played a creditable game throughout, it was her last second, game winning shot that won the 2011 Summer League Championship for Caravel that earned her her second-ever iPOW Award.  To date, only Yasmin, Andrea Hines and Sabrina Hackendorn have managed the feat of winning multiple iPOWs.  At any rate, it can truly be said that Yaz snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with her gutsy gamble with a second (or less) left on the clock.  You can see how it all went down in the video below.

May 18, 2011

Impact Player of the Week - Week Ending May 15, 2011

Alexis Bromwell - Wilmington Tigers 11U

Height:  5' 1"

Current Class:  6th Grade

Positions Played:  Guard

Winter Scholastic Team:  H.B. DuPont Middle School

Other Interests:  Shopping / Hanging Out with Friends

Biggest Basketball Influence:  LeBron James

Probable High School:  A.I. DuPont or Delcastle

How'd she iPOW? At the AAU Division I District Qualifier Tournament (May 13 - 15), Lexi paced the Tigers 6th Grade Team (11U) to a respectable 2 - 2 record.  The team - the only 11U team from Delaware entered in the D1 bracket - finished in 5th place in the tournament.  Consider this performance over the 4 games against top competition: 26 points, 20 rebounds, 11 steals, 5 assists, 8 blocks. Last year, if Lexi had a weakness, it was occasional inconsistency. This year, she puts together good game after good game after good game. Lexi understands, more than most girls her age, that basketball is a sport where running fast and acting quickly are essential skills. She plays the game with her feet, her heart and her head. Because of this, she will go as far in basketball as she wants to.

Winning Criteria

1.  Only players that appear in games covered by DelawareGirlsBasketball.com are eligible.  This will average about one game per week (in-season), though some weeks will feature 2 (or more) and other weeks none.  DGB.com will make every effort to cover a variety of schools and conferences so that iPOW winners will come from all over.  DGB.com is not associated with any particular school or group of schools.  DGB.com is not a recruiting service, nor does it engage in recruiting activity.

2.  While primarily a high school award, if DGB.com is covering a non-high school girls game (such as CYM, public junior high, AAU, etc.), those players are all eligible for the award.

3.  DGB.com reserves the right to withhold an iPOW Award after games where it is determined that no one earned it.

4.  DGB.com reserves the right to award multiple iPOW awards for a single game.  (...Meaning 2 or more girls can win from one game, although this would be very rare.)

5.  iPOW winners do not necessarily have to be on the winning team.

6.  iPOW winners are not asked to or required to do any service for DGB.com in return.

7.  No other "prize", material or monetary gain is extended from DGB.com to the iPOW winners.

8.  Any player offered the award who requests not to be mentioned on the DGB.com website will have the award revoked.  (In other words, if you don't want your name associated with the award, then you don't want the award very much.)

9.  DGB.com reserves any and all other rights not specifically detailed on this page in connection with this award.

NB:  On May 7, 2008, in phone conversation with Marie Dillon at NCAA Headquarters, it was verbally agreed that the iPOW award is "NCAA-legal" (my quotes, not hers).  The gist of the NCAA's concerns being that the award does not consist of any money changing hands and that the website has no ties to any particular school's booster club or athletic department.  The NCAA also requires that DGB.com not be a recruiting service.  (We are not a recruiting service.)

Other than those ground rules, which DGB.com has been in FULL COMPLIANCE WITH, our iPOW Award is acceptable to the NCAA, according to Ms. Dillon, and will not jeopardize any recipient with possible/potential NCAA sanctions.

The following is taken verbatim from an email dated May 14, 2008 from Marie Dillon of the NCAA:

Dear Mr. Charles,

This email is to follow-up from the conversation we had last week regarding your website.  Per our conversation, your questions were regarding providing prospective student athletes (PSA) with a t-shirt and picture on a website with the PSA’s qualifications and achievements.    Per our legislation, providing the PSA’s with a t-shirt, a picture and information on your website would be permitted  provided several criteria is met.  The award would need to be  uniform for all athletes, the criteria for winning the award would need to be the same for all athletes,  the award does not include cash,  it is not being provided by a booster of an institution,  and no recruiting is involved.

Sincerely,

Marie Dillon
