Wilmington Tigers 11U Report / End of Regular Season

(posted 06-22-10)

The U-11 Wilmington Tigers finished up their regular season tournament play in back-to-back tournaments: The Renegade’s Summer Rumble and Fencor’s Summer Classic.

The Renegades ran a decent tournament with 16-minute halves.  We opened the weekend against the11U Collegeville Jaguars, who finished 3rd at D-1 Regionals and who beat last years 10U Tigers by 15-20 points.  The game was hard-fought, but the Tigers led early and never looked back, winning 39-33.  The key to this game was aggressive team defense and unselfish balanced scoring.  Next up were the 12U Jags.  Although the Jags were bigger and stronger, the Tigers won easily 30-23.  Sunday’s first opponent was the 12U Fencor team.  The Tigers dug themselves in a hole early on and while the younger Tigers closed within 5 or less, they were never able to recover and lost 36-27.  The final game of the weekend was against Kyniska Hoops U-12 team.  Kyniska has a couple of players who dominated early.  The lead changed often early before Kyniska pulled ahead by as many as 8 points.  For those familiar with this team, the coaches believe that there are 10 “starters” on this team and usually substitute 5 in and out every 4-5 minutes.  The same held true this weekend.  With eight minutes left in the game, the Tigers were down by 8.  The players in the game were playing great, pulling within 3 on a three-pointer by Alena at the four minute mark.  While most would have kept that group in to finish the game, the coaches believed enough in this team and brought the next five in.  Those players picked up where the others left off.  A huge 3 by Alyssa at about the three minute mark tied the game up.  A lay-up off of a steal by Maggie put the Tigers up for good, winning 32-30.  As always, a relentless defense and a balanced offensive attack were keys in this win.

This past weekend was supposed to be a warm-up for Nationals with 4 quality opponents lined up.  Unfortunately, the Tigers would be without 2 players the entire weekend due to a stomach virus and found themselves playing with 7 girls each day.  The increase in minutes played, playing out of position, and the extreme weather conditions really tested the Tigers.  The NE Rockers were first up on Saturday.  The lead changed often and the Tigers were down by 1 with a little over a minute to go.  A running layup by Alena missed its mark.  However, the Tigers defense forced a turnover allowing Alena to redeem herself the next time down, giving the Tigers a 25-24 win.  Next up were the Maryland Lady Hoopsters who finished 4th at Nationals last year.  We fought hard and pulled within 5 before the Hoopsters pulled away to a 47-34 victory.  Most watching would agree that the game was a lot closer than the final score.  Sunday morning the girls came out ready to play and were leading at half time against a tough SI Rebels team.  Fatigue set in and the Tigers were scoreless in the 2nd half losing 33-20.  Our final game was against the Mid Atlantic Magic who we beat by 2 earlier in the season.  The girls seemed to get a 2nd burst of energy and easily won 40-20. The coaches and families are so proud of the way the girls played this weekend – low in numbers, playing under tropical gym conditions.

The 11U Tigers are traveling to Nashville this weekend for AAU D-2 Nationals.  Thus far they have complied a 20-11 record all while either playing an A level schedule or playing up as a 12U.

Here's Tigers 11U player, Nina Budischak, this past weekend before she twisted her ankle,

which sidelined her on Sunday.

Maggie Connolly in even heavier traffic!  Maggie is a 4th grader playing

Kiera Wendel was one-half of our very first ever DGB.com video player interview.  Although

by rights, a forward, she usually ends up doing a little of this and a little of that before the final buzzer.

would die for.

Wilmington Tigers 10U Report / End of Regular Season

(posted 06-21-10)

The Tiger 10U team heads off to Nationals after posting a 21 - 10 (.677 pct.) record during the season.

The Wilmington Tigers 10U team went 4-0 this past weekend, winning the Fencor Summer Classic and bringing their season record to 21-10.  In our first game, against the Newtown Shamrocks, we dominated the boards, played excellent defense, and won easily 42-6.  Every player on the team grabbed at least one offensive rebound and we tallied 16 steals in the game.  Bridgette Hoy led the team with 10 points but 8 girls scored in the game (Alexis Bromwell 8, Sarah Metz 8, Lindsay Bollinger, 4, Lindsay Brown 4, Ally Walls 4, Jasmine Fisher 2, Annie Brush 2)

Our second game, against Upper Makefield Heat, was another game where we played great defense and won easily.  The girls played like little piranhas, swarming around the ball and making it very difficult for Upper Makefield to pass the ball. As a result we stole the ball an amazing 38 times during the game.  We also shot very well during this game.  For the game we shot 26-65 (40%).  Alexis Bromwell led all scorers with 14 points (12 in the first half), while Bridgette Hoy added 9 and Sarah Metz finished with 8.  Other scorers include: Olivia Winslow 6, Ally Walls 6, Olivia Craig 2, Lindsay Bollinger 2, Annie Brush 2, Lindsay Brown 2, and Margaret Sullivan 2.

Sunday brought on much tougher competition and more challenging games.  Our first game, against the Upper Makefield older team was a hard fought battle.  We came out a bit slow and did not play the swarming defense we played on Saturday.  As a result we found ourselves up only 9-7 at half.  The second half was better and we got some key baskets when we needed them to pull out a 19-13 win.  Alexis Bromwell led the team with 8 points, Annie Brush added 4.  Olivia Winslow led the team with 6 rebounds against a much bigger team.

Our final game, a 25-17 win over the Lenape Rebels, rounded out the perfect weekend.  We did  a real nice job setting the pace of the game and attacked the boards to jump out to a 17-7 halftime lead.  After dominating the second half the same way we allowed a few late baskets to shrink our lead.  Olivia Winslow hit a key basket late to stop the Rebel rally.  Olivia Winslow and Alexis Bromwell each scored 6 points and Annie Brush added 5.  Alexis led the team with 12 rebounds.

While we were not happy with the 13 minute halves, after having been told by the tournament director that we would be playing 14 minutes halves, we were happy with the girls play this weekend.  We will now take about a month off before heading down to Disney to represent the Mid-Atlantic at the National tournament.

Lexi Bromwell scored 231 points on the season to lead the team.  Not too bad for a 5th grader in her first AAU season!

Olivia Winslow has a remarkable love for the game -- and a bushel full of skills.  Possibly the best defensive player on the team, and near the top in shooting percent, steals and rebounds.

Sarah Metz readies her unique shooting style, which is one part basketball shot, one part baseball curveball, and one part Wild West gunslinger.  To the right, Bridgette Hoy executes a PERFECT box out!

Lexi Bromwell takes it in left side.  Teammates "Hurricane" Annie Brush (#34) and Bridgette Hoy look on in approval.

A very promising post player on the team is Lindsay Bollinger, who is seen here confronting 3 opponents!

Guard, Margaret Sullivan, shows supreme determination every second she's on the court.

Jasmine Fisher protects the ball to her right against the Upper Makefield opponent.

Olivia Craig scored 133 points on the season -- a very solid showing for her first AAU season.

Wilmington Tigers 9u Report:

(posted 06-17-10)

The Wilmington Tigers 9U team, along with another 109 teams, played in the Comets Tournament June 12-13.  The weekend began with our Tigers playing Fencor, who earlier in the day lost by 10 to the same Comets team that finished second in the Middle Atlantic Championship.  Although our Tigers looked much better than they did in their week one game against Fencor, it was clear our young Tigers were overmatched, dropping this one 38-17.  In the afternoon game, the Tigers played a Classics Basketball 8U team.  For the first time this year our Tigers, who feature five girls eligible to be playing on an 8U team, got to play a team that more closely resembled themselves.  The Tigers took advantage and pounced on their prey early and often.  Six Tiger players scored, led by fourth grade forward Alexis Oakley (12 points) and third grade point guard Kayla Wolff (8 points).  The Tigers won this contest 37-16.

Sunday play began at 8AM against an 11U Vogues team.  Our Tigers were frustrated when it came to the rebounding game.  On both the offensive and defensive glass, the Vogues were able to reach over our Tigers and pull down rebounds.  Even with good position and arms extended, our Tigers didn’t have a chance on the glass.  However, there were some bright spots, including second-grader Julie Kulesza’s first three point shot of the year and good post play by Corrie Sterling against a much bigger team.  The Tigers dropped this one 41-13.  The afternoon ended with a competitive game against the Future Stars.  Although our Tigers started off slow and found themselves down by 12 at the half, a pressing defense and fast break offense created some scoring opportunities for the Tigers in the second half.  Corrie Sterling continued her strong post play, adding six points and six rebounds.  After missing the morning game, point guard Allie Olmstead joined the team and added 7 points to the cause.  Last, but not least, third-grader Olivia Tucker added 8 points and eclipsed the century mark in scoring, ending the game with 105 points for the season.  Even with the Tiger’s strong showing in the second half, the Stars won this one 32-29.

All Tigers scored this weekend: Olivia Tucker – 26, Alexis Oakley – 14, Allie Olmstead – 12, Corrie Sterling – 11, Kayla Wolff – 9, Natalie DePaulo – 7, Julie Kulesza – 4, Erica Hager – 2, Shelby Bailey-Smiley – 2, and Haylee McMullen - 2.

The Tigers 9U team will close out the season in Wildwood, NJ this weekend, June 18-20, at the Scoop Taylor Invitational.

(posted 06-08-10)

The Wilmington Tigers 10U team went 3-1 in the Chesco Lighting Spring Shootout this past weekend improving their season record to 17-10.  Alexis Bromwell (14pts.) and Olivia Winslow (9 pts.) led the way in our first game scoring 23 of our 39 points.  Olivia also added 9 rebounds and 6 steals in the game.  Our 2nd game, a 28-20 win over the Comets 10B team that finished 2nd in DII Regionals, was a team effort. Annie Brush (7 pts.), Bridgette Hoy (6 pts.) and Ally Walls (6 pts.) led the team in scoring.  Bridgette also pulled down a team high 10 rebounds.  This game featured some really nice passing as we tallied 7 assists in the game.

Our third game, a 30-23 loss to the Collegeville Jags, was a tale of two halves.  The 1st half we did not play aggressive defense and found ourselves down 20-8 at half.  The second half we played much better and we pulled within 4 points late in the game.  Alexis (10 pts.) and Annie (7 pts.) led the team in scoring for the game.  Our final game of the weekend was a nice 36-12 win over Kyniska Hoops.  We passed the ball well, rebound well (41 in the game) and played great aggressive defense (26 steals).  Olivia Craig led the team with 10 points, most coming on drives to the hoop.  Lindsay Bollinger led the team with 10 rebounds in the game.  While it was VERY HOT in the gyms this weekend the girls played really well and continue to improve each week.

Over the course of the weekend everyone on the team scored at least one basket and grabbed at least one rebound.  Scoring leaders included: Alexis Bromwell 30 points 15 rebounds (3 games), Annie Brush 23 points 8 rebounds, Bridgette Hoy 18 points 20 rebounds, Olivia Craig 14 points 6 rebounds (3 games), Ally Walls 12 points 10 rebounds, Olivia Winslow 9 points 30 rebounds, Lindsay Bollinger 6 points 16 rebounds. (3 games), Jasmine Fisher 5 points 4 rebounds, Margaret Sullivan 5 points 8 rebounds., Sarah Metz 4 points 11 rebounds (2 games), Lindsay Brown 2 points 2 rebounds (2 games).

#2, Sarah Metz, executes the "pick", while #34, Annie Brush, executes the "roll."

One of the strongest arms on the team belongs to Lindsay Brown, and here she is preparing to throw a very long pass.

Wilmington Tigers 9u Report:

(posted 06-02-10)

The Wilmington Tigers 9U team played in the Charm City National Invitational Tournament in Baltimore.  The weekend began with our Tigers playing the PSPA Rams.  From the outset, one could tell this one would come down to the final buzzer.  The Rams used their height advantage to establish strong inside play, while the Tigers elected to keep the ball outside and shoot jumpers.  Three pointers by Allie Olmstead and Olivia Tucker and an aggressive 2nd half full-court Tiger press set up the decisive game-winning shots.  With less than 30 seconds to play and the Tigers down 20-19, Natalie DePaulo was sent to the charity strip for two shots.  Like a seasoned veteran, she drained both shots and the Tigers won 21-19.  In the afternoon game, our Tigers played the Lady Cougars.  The Cougars had a physical make-up similar to the Rams, so Coach Sterling employed a similar outside game strategy.  The Lady Cougars appeared happy to allow the Tiger outside shooting, so third grade sharp-shooter Olivia Tucker proceeded to drain shot after shot from 15-17 feet.  By the time the Cougars came out to defend, Olivia had amassed a season high 14 points from the field.  However, the Cougars used their height advantage to out-rebound the Tigers on the offensive glass for second and third chance points.  The Tigers came up short in this one 21-17.

Sunday play began with a semi-final match-up against the undefeated 10U Columbia Ravens.  Our Tigers were clearly over-matched, but that didn’t stop them from giving it the old Tiger try!  Several parents from the Ravens team commented on the hustle our Tigers displayed in running after every loose ball and fighting for every jump ball.  Natalie DePaulo led the Tiger scoring effort, but in the end, it was the Ravens winning this one 32-10.

Leading the Tiger offensive charge this weekend was: Olivia Tucker – 27, Natalie DePaulo – 8, Allie Olmstead – 6, Corrie Sterling – 4, Shelby Bailey-Smiley – 2, and Kayla Wolff – 1.  Other team members include: Alexis Oakley, Julie Kulesza, Erica Hager, Courtney Brown, and Haylee McMullen.

Wilmington Tigers 9u Report:

(posted 05-11-10)

The Wilmington Tigers 9U team played in the Lizzie Haddon Tournament along with seven other Tiger teams. Although it wasn’t a great weekend for wins, these Mighty Tigers certainly enjoyed themselves! Candy shopping topped the list of off-court activities, while on the court, the Tigers had two players reach the 50-point milestone for the season: Allie Olmstead and Olivia Tucker.

The weekend began with our Tigers playing the Ewing Ballers. With several players being just a tad shorter than this author, I had a very difficult time believing these girls were a 9U team! Although our Tigers played aggressively and battled for every loose ball, the height advantage helped Ewing to a 37-11 victory. In the afternoon game, our Tigers played the Great Valley Cyclones. This game featured some outstanding post play by Natalie DePaulo, who scored all 12 of her points in the first half! Strong post play, an oppressive Tiger defense, and fast break offense had the Tigers winning this one 36-9.

Sunday play began bright and early, with our Tigers playing a very talented JKMBA team. This was one of those games where no matter how many shots we took, none were sinking. JKMBA won this one going away 35-12. The afternoon game featured a rematch with the Midatlantic Magic, whom our Tigers had played previously. Although the Magic got the W (43-20), it was apparent our Tigers had improved in all aspects of their game since the last meeting. Ball movement, shot selection, rebounding, and defensive match-ups were much better in this author’s opinion. Overall, it was an enjoyable weekend for both players and parents.

Leading the Tiger offensive charge this weekend was: Olivia Tucker – 20, Natalie DePaulo – 19, Allie Olmstead – 18, Alexis Oakley – 10, Corrie Sterling – 6, Kayla Wolff – 2, Julie Kulesza – 2, and Erica Hager – 2

Wilmington Tigers 16u Report:

Tigers vs. Tar Heels at the Lizzie Haddon Tournament

(posted 05-07-10)

The starting 5 did a great job of running Coach K's defense and confounded the Tar Heels for the first several minutes of the game and wore down the Heels.  Then in a master stroke of Coaching Genius, Coach K put in Lindsey Nichols off the bench and she proceeded to slice and dice the Heels defense to score several straight baskets.  I don't have an exact amount but I'd say she ran off somewhere from 3 to 5 baskets in a row to spark the Tigers to a nice halftime lead.  In the second half, Kara Gallagher took charge, literally.  The Tigers held a nice lead when Kara drove to the hoop and was fouled hard going in.  The refs called the foul on the Heels' player which led to an outburst by the Heels' assistant coach complaining that Kara should get an offensive foul.  The coach was a true dingle berry and kept yelling at the refs, ultimately resulting in his ejection from the game and giving the Tigers a chance to shoot an extra set of free throws on the Technical Foul call against the Heels coach.  Kara sank all four and we then inbounded and got another basket for a nice 6 point extra advantage.  The Tigers ended the game shooting an impressive 80% from the charity stripe whereas the Heels, I'm guessing, only sank 40% or less.  It was a very entertaining game to watch.  We wound up winning by 25 + points and capping off a 4 game winning streak at the tournament.  Quite a nice accomplishment considering we were missing between 1 to 3 players over the entire weekend due to conflicts.  The girls are starting to really gel and are bonding well.  I predict good things to come!  Just a humble Mom's point of view!

Lindsey Nichols has the pedigree and the talent.  And you don't have to wait for her to have a gangbuster season next winter.  She's in the middle of one right now in AAU.

Like Nichols, Kara Gallagher is a St. Mark's Spartan in the winter.  Kara is a forward who is good with the ball, plays a very physical style and hates to lose.

Rounding out a trifecta of St. Mark's players is the wonderful Alison Zimny.

When seen in action at the tournament against the Lehigh Valley Outcasts, DGB.com described Zimny's play with one word:  Masterful.  Here she is being masterful on defense.

Keeping this from being an all Spartan photo essay is Ursuline's Jill Lyons, seen here on a floor tussle for the ball.

Jill is one of two girls still in the Tiger program that goes all the way back to the club's inaugural season (2006).

Delaware Angels 12U Report:

(posted 05-04-10)

The Delaware Angels 12 and under team has been very busy the last two months.  Our team this year consists of 12 players, six returning from last year’s team and 6 new players of which three are new to AAU basketball.  We have a great group of athletic girls who are improving each and every day.

As of today we are 12 and 5 in tournament play with three of the five losses decided in the last seconds. We lost a heart breaker this weekend 50-49 on a last second shot after Renada Litalien put us up by one with a timely three point shot.  We rebounded and finished the tournament with a strong win.  Overall, our scoring production has gradually improved.  Over the last several games we have been putting up 40 plus points a game.  Even better our scoring is balanced with most games all 12 girls contributing.  Our shirts define our mission “We not I”.  We approach each game with this in mind.  We do not have a superstar on our team.  We operate with a starting twelve with all our girls called on to play quality minutes.

Our sights are set on the upcoming Regionals taking place this weekend.  Mark Tobin (founder of the program) surprised the girls last week with new uniforms.  We decided to save them for the Regionals.  Also, the girls are looking forward to a “friendly” game scheduled with a Pittsburgh team we befriended out at Nationals last year.  The game is scheduled for May 14th at the Villanova Fieldhouse.  The Pittsburgh team finished 9th in the Nationals last year so you can imagine the text messages going back and forth this winter.

I have attached a picture of our team taken this weekend.  Looking at the picture there is no recession in the Orthodontist business.

As this report was quite large and accompanied by many great photos, we decided to isolate it apart with its own PDF file.  We encourage coaches to turn in reports like this if they have the time and resources to do so.  As the idea is to promote your teams, there is almost no such thing as a team report that is too large.

The Wilmington Tigers 10-U team went 4-0, and finished 1st in their age group, at the Renegades Tournament held April 10th-11th.   We struggled offensively in our first game but played excellent defense on our way to a 24-13 victory over the Lower Bucks Lightning.   We came out a bit sluggish in the second game and found ourselves tied 14 all at half.  We started the second half strong and held a 7 point lead with 2 minutes to go.  Rock Solid, our opponents, went on a little run but came up short on a last second three point attempt and we held on for a 28-25 win. We came out strong Sunday morning with a 33-13 win over the York Thunder.  We played well on both ends of the floor and that set the tone for what looked to be our toughest game of the weekend.  Our final game, against a very talented Staten Island Rebels team, was the best game we’ve played all season. We jumped out to a 9-1 lead and held a 17-5 halftime margin.  We started the second half a little slow but quickly got back on track. Both teams traded baskets for much of the half and we finished with a 37-25 win.  On the weekend, every player on the team scored at least one basket.  Alexis Bromwell led all scorers with 39 points on the weekend and shot an amazing 67.8% from the floor (19 for 28).  Other scorers included: Annie Brush who dropped in 26 points (12 coming against the Rebels), and Olivia Craig who finished with 19 points.  Lindsay Bollinger and Olivia Winslow led the team with 19 rebounds each.  Overall, it was a great weekend of basketball for the 10-U Tigers.

Coach Nitsche and the team.

I have some information from our recent tournament this last weekend at the Chesco Lighting in West Chester.  The 15U Angels played in West Chester this last weekend (April 17 and 18).  We were put into a pool with four good teams and came away with a perfect 4-0 record.  The first game we dominated on both sides of the floor and won 49-18.  Kelly Perillo had 25 points for us as she was very effective around the basket.  Kelly then had to leave for the balance of the weekend and our team needed to step up their game as our best rebounder and inside player would not be there.  In the second game on Saturday, we played the Delaware Panthers, who have a number of good low post players that were all taller than anyone left on our roster.  We used pressure defense and good guard play led by Maddy Lang with 15 points to prevail in a close game 45-36.  Meghan Carter chipped in with 9 points in limited time on the court due to an injury.

Hannah Nitsche on defense.

On Sunday, we played two different Renegade teams.  In the first game, we again pressured the ball and pulled out a tough victory 32-19.  In that game Maddy, Natalie Stella and Monica Dawyot all had 8 points in the effort.  In the last game of the weekend, we were faced with another taller opponent who had won all of their previous three games.  We played very well in the first half and led 20-9 at the half due to some very good defense.  In the second half, we were tired at the beginning of the half as we played the entire weekend with only 7 players.  We let them back into the game and for the balance of the second half the game went back and forth.  As time neared the end of regulation, Hannah Nitsche made two key three-pointers, one with only 8 seconds to go to force overtime.  In overtime, we were down by 5 with 41 seconds to go and Maddy Lang stepped up and hit a three to bring it to two.  After a made foul shot by the other team, we had the ball with just seconds left and Maddy Lang again hit another three as time ran out to tie it.  The second overtime was sudden death so the first team to score would be victorious.  We won the tap and moved our offense into a position for Natalie Stella to draw a foul going to the basket.  Natalie calmly stepped up and made the first free throw to win the game for us.  It was very exciting and capped a great effort by all the girls for the tournament.  In that last game, Maddy Lang and Hannah Nitsche had 15, Michelle Lonergan had 10 and Natalie Stella had 8 to lead the team to a hard fought 48-47 victory.

The Wilmington Tigers 9U team resumed play April 10-11 in the Sparks – Ignite Your Game Classic.  The Mighty Tigers finished the weekend 2-2 while igniting the crowd in both come from behind last minute victories, one in regulation and one in overtime.

The Tigers opened play Saturday against a very aggressive Northeast Rockers team.  The Tigers fell behind quickly 10-0 and trailed 11-2 at the half.  The Tiger defense picked up in the second half allowing the Rockers only 4 second half points.  Shots started to fall, but it took a 3 pointer by Allie Olmstead in the closing seconds of the game to seal the deal, 16-15.  In the night game, the Tigers battled the Great Valley Cyclones.  The game was tied 8-8 at the half, but the Cyclones jumped out to an 8 point lead early in the second half.  The Tigers fought back to within 2 with a strong full-court press, but the girls clearly ran out of gas, dropping this one 20-14.

Sunday play began at 8AM, and after a 7PM game the night before, the Tigers had little hop in their steps.  It also didn’t help that their opponent was a very good Comets team.  The Comets jumped out to a 22-2 lead and never looked back, winning this one 37-5.  In the afternoon game, the Tigers woke up against a good Kyniska team.  The Tigers trailed 9-4 at the half, but you could hear the roar of the Tigers in the second half.  Tigers could be seen flying all over the floor for loose balls.  Second half highlights included two 3 pointers by Allie Olmstead and a jump shot by Olivia Tucker in the closing seconds to send the game into overtime.  In overtime, Olivia was 4-6 from the foul line and hit a jumper to tie the game at 23-23.  A free throw by Allie with under a minute remaining sealed the deal, with the Tigers winning in exciting fashion 24-23.

All Tiger players contributed defensively throughout the tournament, allowing the team to score on the offensive end:  Allie Olmstead – 16 (including four 3-pointers), Olivia Tucker – 14, Kayla Wolff – 8, Corrie Sterling – 6, Courtney Brown – 4, Natalie DePaulo – 3, Julie Kulesza – 2, Erica Hager – 2, Alexis Oakley – 2, Shelby Bailey-Smiley – 2, and Haylee McMullen.

The Wilmington Tigers 11U team opened their AAU season this past weekend at the Sparks Ignite Your Game tournament.  The girls played well and  finished the weekend 3-1.  The team opened up against the hosts, The Sparks. They seemed to come out a little tight and trailed 11-9 at the half. They came out in the second half more focused and won 33-29.  The second game game was against a very big and very talented Mid Penn Motion team.  Defensively the team seemed to collapse and the girls played very timid.   The Motion led early and never looked back winning 54-19.  The national level Motion continued to win by margins of 30 plus the entire weekend.    Our first game Sunday morning was against the Baltimore Ravens.  The Ravens played the Rockers the day before and game back from a large deficit to win that game.  The girls came out more focused and on point defensively.  The Tigers lead early and never looked back winning easily 47-22.  In our final game, against Kyniska Hoops who had beaten a tough Wizzards team in OT.   Kyniska never quit and were tenacious defensively.  They pressured with a scrappy and constantly changing defensive set up flowing from zone to man and back to a different zone.  We  led early and never trailed winning 25-16.

The team is well rounded and very deep.  All players contributed offensively and defensively.  Alyssa Irons (St. E’s) and Kailyn Kampert (St. Catherine's) led all  scorers for the weekend with 23 points each.  Lone 4th grader Maggie Connolly (St. Mary Magdalen) was huge with 21 including 3 tres.  Newcomer, Taylor Samuels (Elkton Middle School), dropped 17.   Gabby Jullian  (St. John) scored 12 including 6 in the last game. Scoring was rounded out by Emilie Hager (IHM) 10, Alena Skowronski (IHM) 9, Kiera Wendel (IHM) 6 and Kristina Vlard (Elkton Middle School) 4.    Kiera was a force defensively as well the boards despite often being smaller than her opponents.  She was able to draw 5 offensive fouls while only picking up 6 total fouls the entire weekend.    While there is much to work on, the coaches were very pleased with this start and are looking forward to the rest of the season.

The Wilmington Tigers 9U team opened their AAU season March 27-28th at the Fencor Tournament. It certainly was a learning experience for the girls, many of whom are new to AAU basketball. The team finished 1-3, but the girls played very tough and the coaches saw much improvement during the course of the weekend. The Tigers played three very good teams: Jersey Shore Wildcats, Fencor, and the Renegades. They opened play against the Wildcats and kept the game close for the first half (9-3), but eventually gave way to the Wildcats for a 22-12 final. The next two games were against a very tough Fencor team who played, and beat, an 11U team the same weekend. The Tigers displayed great hustle and good sportsmanship, but dropped both games (35-10 and 27-12). In the final game of the weekend, the Tigers played the Renegades. The game was tied 6-6 at the half as a number of Tiger shots were not falling. In the second half, the Tigers started to pull away. Their aggressive defense was noted by all, as the Renegades would score only 3 points in the second half. The Tigers ended the weekend with a 19-9 victory. Scoring for the weekend: Olivia Tucker - 12, Ally Olmstead - 11 (including a three-pointer), Natalie Depaulo - 8, Alexis Oakley - 8, Courtney Brown – 4, Shelby Bailey-Smiley – 4. Other team members who contributed with great hustle and aggressive defense include: Corrie Sterling, Julie Kulesza, Kayla Wolff, Hayley McMullen, and Erica Hager. The Tigers shot 38 free throws in four games! The Tigers resume play April 10-11 in the Sparks – Ignite Your Game Classic.

Tigers 10U Update

(posted 03-31-10)

The Wilmington Tigers 10U team started their AAU season this past weekend at the Fencor tournament.  Faced with a tough schedule (Northeast Rockers, Comets, Fencor, Mid-Atlantic Magic) the girls played well and finished the weekend 2-2.  The team, made up of mostly first time AAU players, took an early lead against the NE Rockers and never looked back winning 26-16.  In the next game we faced a tough Comets team and had a hard time making our shots; as a result we couldn’t keep pace with the more experienced team.  Our first game Sunday morning was a tough match up against an experienced Fencor team. Down 16-12 at half we battled back in the first 5 minutes of the second half for a 23-18 lead.  From there we struggled from the floor and Fencor slowly pulled away.  We ended up losing by 9 but played some of our best basketball all weekend.  In our final game, against the Magic, we jumped out to a big halftime lead and held on to win 21-14 for our second win of the weekend.  Olivia Craig (St. Catherine) led all scorers for the weekend with 25 points.  Alexis Bromwell (St. Anthony) dropped in 17 points while shooting over 47% from the field.  Annie Brush (St. John) scored 13 points on the weekend including a three-pointer.  Olivia Winslow (St. Anthony) led the weekend in rebounding with 21 boards, 10 of them coming in the final game against the Magic.   Lindsay Bollinger (St. Mary Magdalene) grabbed 13 rebounds as well.  Other team members include: Lindsay Brown (St. Matthews), Ally Walls (St. John),  Jasmine Fisher (St. Anthony), Margaret Sullivan (St. Mary Magdalene), Sarah Metz (St. Catherine), and Bridgette Hoy (St. Francis).  We are off this weekend for Easter but will play in the Renegades tournament April 10th-11th
