Nature in the Delaware Valley Page 2 Continuing with Brandywine Creek Park... Although Crape Myrtles are commonly thought of as a "Southern" shrub/tree, there are many to be found in the Tri-State Region. Some very nice specimens are in Brandywine Park.
Above, a nice white Crape planted on a hillside just outside of the park. Another tree, thought of in many circles as "Southern", is the Mimosa Tree (Albizia Julibrissin). In all actuality, Mimosa Trees are found in many places in the East and Mid-West. Still, they do lend a tropical air to wherever they are found. Below are some Mimosas growing in Bradywine Park. They tend to favor the banks of the creek where a steady supply of ground moisture can be had for their roots.
This last Mimosa (below) was found growing on the banks of the Christina River within the city limits of Wilmington.
On the following pages, I'll show you some trees that TRULY are "pushing it" for growing in a place that gets as cold as Wilmington, Delaware.
